Recently, two British scientists developed a device to “sniff†urine samples for diagnosis of bladder cancer that can detect gaseous chemicals released by bladder cancer cells. Professor Prubert of the University of Liverpool and Professor Ratcliffe of the University of the West England developed the instrument. Two scholars said that the preliminary test showed that the accuracy exceeded 90%, but further research was needed to improve the test method. If this test method can eventually be widely used, doctors will be able to confirm the diagnosis earlier and increase the patient's chances of recovery.
According to reports, there are 10,000 cases of bladder cancer in Britain every year. The medical community has been looking for ways to diagnose the disease earlier. Early bladder cancer has a higher chance of cure. Experts previously believed that urine odor was the key to research, because studies have shown that dogs can smell the smell of cancer.
Professor Ratcliffe said that after heating the urine samples, the instruments they developed were used to analyze the gaseous chemicals released by the samples. Of the 98 test samples, 24 were from male bladder cancer patients and 74 were from men with bladder problems but no cancer.
Professor Prubert said that they need more samples to further test the accuracy of the instrument.
Dr Sarah Hazell of Cancer Research UK, a charity organization, affirmed this research report. “But this test method is still in the preliminary stage and requires larger samples, including male and female. Sample to test the instrument."
